4 ways Sanofi is using AI to power pharma innovations

Sanofi announced its latest endeavor into AI technologies with the use of an internal app, which company CEO Paul Hudson says is a move to align with its aim to become the "first pharma company powered by artificial intelligence at scale," according to a June 13 news release.

The company's gravitation toward AI doesn't stop there, though. Here are four ways the pharmaceutical giant it is using the technology to improve processes across different company sectors:

  1. Its app, Plai, will be used internally for insight into real-time data and will also provide custom "what if" scenarios for teams working on projects across the entire company. The tool can also help predict 80 percent of low inventory positions, providing insight for supply teams.

  2. Sanofi's research and development teams make use of multiple AI tools to streamline predictive modeling and automation, which allows it to accelerate the research process to develop therapies more quickly. These tools are also being used in its work with mRNA vaccine development and research.

  3. Across clinical operations, Sanofi is using AI tools for enhancing digitization processes and reconfiguring how it runs clinical trials.

  4. Sanofi also developed an in-house AI tool used to "learn from past and current batch performance to enable consistently higher yield levels." This helps it optimize the use of raw materials — something known to cause delays across the medical supply chain.

Several company acquisitions and partnerships with the likes of other AI-powered companies including Amunix Pharmaceuticals, Exscientia, Insilico Medicine, Atomwise and Owkin point to signs that it will not slow down moves to increasingly lean on AI as a tool.

"We have just scratched the surface as to how we embrace these disruptive technologies to achieve our ambition of transforming the practice of medicine," Mr. Hudson said.
