10 key wins for WVU Medicine pharmacy

As Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine’s pharmacy department concludes its 2023-25 strategic plan and prepared for the next three-year cycle, it highlighted several accomplishments in an annual report.

Here are 10 wins from 2024: 

1. Opening the Pharmacy Consolidated Service Center at the Innovation Corp. 

2. Reduced Omnicell stockouts by 40%.

3. Finalized construction plans to expand pharmacy services at Fairmont Medical Center.

4. Administered the first dose of a new gene therapy for muscular dystrophy.

5. Implemented an Omnicell inventory management program at WVU Medicine’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, achieving net savings of $300,000.

6. Added a lead drug diversion coordinator at the system level.

7. Expanded clinical services into ambulatory clinics.

8. Implemented DrFirst, a medication management network, to improve medication history accuracy.

9. Significantly increased volumes in the system’s outpatient, specialty and home infusion pharmacies. 

10. Achieved a 94% outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy intervention acceptance rate and an 82% complex outpatient antimicrobial therapy intervention acceptance rate.
