White House Pushes Nebraska to Expand Medicaid

White House Deputy Adviser David Simas and two Democratic Nebraska senators will discuss the importance of expanding Medicaid coverage in the state on a conference call with reporters today, according to a report from The Hill.

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, states have the option of expanding their Medicaid programs to cover people earning up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level. So far, 25 states — most with Republican governors or legislatures — have opted not to expand their programs, according to the report. Nebraska is among the states that have decided not to extend Medicaid eligibility.

Mr. Simas and the Democratic lawmakers will address how state officials could help an additional 48,000 people get insurance by 2016 through the expansion, according to the report.
