Aside from UnitedHealth, only three other insurers — Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, ConnectiCare and HealthyCT — offer coverage through Access Health CT. UnitedHealthcare covered 1,477 enrollees — or 1.3 percent of Access Health CT’s market — as of last week.
The departure is primarily due to financial losses. UnitedHealth has already confirmed it will stop selling Affordable Care Act exchange plans in Arkansas, Georgia and Michigan as of 2017.
Access Health CT CEO Jim Wadleigh didn’t seem surprised. “This is normal for companies that are stronger to win out,” he said, according to the report. “While the initial perception is it’s bad because we’re losing choice, it’s also good as we’re now seeing the next phase of the [ACA] here, where the market’s going to start shaking itself out and the stronger players in the individual market will stay longer.”
