Temporary waivers offered after Carolinas HealthCare, United contract expires

Although Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System physicians and hospitals are no longer considered in-network for UnitedHealthcare members, some members will be eligible to continue receiving in-network benefits during a transition period, according to a Charlotte Observer report.

Carolinas HealthCare spokeswoman Amy Murphy told the Charlotte Observer the system has decided to extend temporary waivers to United members so they will be billed as though they were in-network.

The waiver applies to patients with appointments at physicians' offices in the Charlotte market during March and April, with the exception of Medicare Advantage patients, according to the report. It also applies to  patients receiving treatment at Carolinas HealthCare hospitals in the Charlotte market at least through May 30. The waiver does not apply to Carolinas HealthCare hospitals outside the Charlotte area.

The contract between Carolinas HealthCare and United expired Feb. 28.

United spokeswoman Tracey Lempner told the Charlotte Observer United "remain(s) committed to working with CHS in finding an acceptable solution that would renew their participation in our network."
