Ohio Legislature Passes Bill to Create Medicaid Oversight Panel

Ohio lawmakers have passed a bill that aims to control Medicaid costs by creating a joint legislative oversight panel, according to a WOSU report.

The Senate passed the bill on Wednesday, and a spokesman for Gov. John Kasich said the governor plans to sign the measure, according to the report. Panel members would work with an actuary to analyze Medicaid costs, and the proposal also includes spending growth targets tied to the lesser of the three-year average medical inflation rate in the Midwest or the projected inflation rate as determined by the panel, according to the report.

Earlier this year, an existing oversight panel approved Gov. Kasich's plans to expand Ohio's Medicaid program, ending months of debate over extending the program under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Gov. Kasich sought the panel's approval as a way around the Republican-controlled state legislature, which had rejected the expansion.
