Number of first-day ACA exchange enrollees up 50% over last year

The first day of open enrollment for 2017 ACA marketplace health coverage saw a 50 percent increase in applications over last year's start date, reports CNBC.

HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell tweeted Tuesday HealthCare.gov saw more than 60,000 applications within the first six hours of enrollment in the 39 states the exchange services.

A HHS spokesperson said the large application volume did slow down some of the exchange processing, according to the report.

President Barack Obama's administration predicts monthly enrollment will average 11.4 million next year, an increase of 9 percent from the monthly average this year.
