A statement from the New York State Comptroller's office claimed that the state's Department of Health allowed $1.5 billion in erroneous Medicaid payments over the past few years.
According to state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli over the course of three reports, some of the funding may have allowed patients to see providers without national provider identifiers, meaning they may not be qualified or credentialed.
Auditors noted $57.3 million in improper pharmacy claims without appropriate NPIs.
Department of Health officials have reviewed each report, including recommendations, and have agreed to take actions.
