Maryland co-op needs acquisition approval before selling on ACA marketplace

Baltimore-based nonprofit payer Evergreen Health will not be listed on Maryland's ACA exchange until its acquisition and conversion to a for-profit entity concludes, The Baltimore Sun reports.

Evergreen said in October a group of investors will acquire the insurer and it will switch to a for-profit company. CMS needs to approve the acquisition before Evergreen health plans can be offered on the state's exchange, called Maryland Health Connection.

Exchange enrollees searching for Evergreen plans were routed to a message reading: "Evergreen plans are not available at this time. Maryland Health Connection expects to know soon if Evergreen plans will become available before open enrollment for 2017 ends. It is important to choose a plan by Dec. 15 to ensure Jan. 1 coverage. If you choose a plan now with a different carrier, you may still switch to Evergreen if those plans become available prior to the end of open enrollment on Jan. 31," according to the report.
