Maine to launch state-based insurance marketplace

Maine's governor announced plans to change its health insurance exchange to a state-based marketplace.

Democratic Maine Gov. Janet Mills sent a letter of intent to CMS Aug. 29 notifying the agency that the state will pursue a state-based marketplace for the 2021 plan year. Ms. Mills plans to introduce legislation outlining the new marketplace in January.

Maine currently allows the federal government to fully run its health insurance marketplace. Under the state-based model, the state will oversee outreach, marketing and consumer assistance initiatives more than previously. The federal government will still provide assistance through its call center and the HealthCare.gov platform.
