Leading health insurers collectively add 4.3M members in Q2

Seven of the leading health insurers in the U.S. saw their membership grow 3 percent in the second quarter of fiscal year 2015, compared to the same period of last year.

At the end of the second quarter of FY 2015, Aetna, Cigna, Health Care Service Corp., Humana, Kaiser Permanente, UnitedHealth Group and Anthem had collectively added nearly 4.3 million members since the same period of the year prior, according to a report by Mark Farrah Associates.

UnitedHealth reported significant membership gains, with the health insurer's medical membership growing to 37.8 million, up from 36.5 million members in the same period a year ago. That number does not include UnitedHealth's Medicare supplement members of about 4 million.

Anthem and Aetna both saw healthy gains in the period as well, with medical membership increasing 3.4 percent and 2 percent, respectively, year over year.

The report also assessed the profitability of four of the seven health plans — Aetna, Anthem, Kaiser and UnitedHealth. Aetna reported a 5.1 percent profit margin for the period, up from a 4.6 percent margin in the same period the year prior. Anthem's profit margin jumped to 4.4 percent, up from 3.9 percent in the same period of last year. UnitedHealth also saw its profit margin improve in the second quarter. Although Kaiser's profit margin dropped to 6.6 percent in the second quarter of FY 2015, down from 7.5 percent the year prior, it continues to outperform the other top plans in terms of profit margin, according to the report.
