The Obama administration has been advising those affected by the errors that starting over with their states’ Medicaid agencies is the fastest way to enroll, according to the report. Some state officials are enrolling people using incomplete data files from HealthCare.gov, while others are sending out letters asking those deemed eligible through the federal site to contact their state to sign up. The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, for instance, is sending letters to 10,000 people telling them to sign up through a state Medicaid website, according to the report.
White House senior communications adviser Tara McGuinness told the Post that “100 percent” of those who are having problems with Medicaid or CHIP enrollment are being contacted by federal officials or their states of residence.
The issue with the federal exchange site transmitting incomplete information about people deemed eligible for Medicaid or CHIP isn’t new. Late last year, following the site’s launch, state officials spoke up about the same issue. CMS sent a memo to the 36 states using HealthCare.gov acknowledging the problem and stating another system was being developed to send the application information.
CMS has been working with 10 states to test the automatic transfer of enrollee information from HealthCare.gov to the states, according to the report. However, the effort hasn’t been promising. In Tennessee, for example, CMS attempted to send 10 files in mid-December, and only three were received.
