California's health exchange, Covered California, released a draft wavier seeking federal approval to sell health plans to undocumented immigrants under the Affordable Care Act, The Press Democrat reported.
The ACA does not allow undocumented immigrants to buy health plans via state and federal exchanges. However, if the wavier is approved by the federal government, Covered California will be the first to sell health plans in the individual market to undocumented immigrants. Income-based subsidies will be restricted to U.S. citizens, however.
California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill in June requesting the waiver. If approved, an estimated 17,000 of the state's 2.5 million undocumented immigrants could purchase health plans through Covered California, according to the report.
