Cigna system error exposes customer bank accounts, claims data

Cigna inadvertently revealed private information, including bank account details and claims information, of some policyholders in Asia, the health insurer told Bloomberg.

In early May, Cigna sent the personal information of a small number of members who work outside of their home country to some healthcare providers and customers. The disclosure resulted from an system error in its claim system, according to the company.

A Cigna spokesperson declined to provide Bloomberg a specific number of affected individuals, but clarified a cyberattack did not cause the error.

"Cigna's claim system erroneously issued claim settlement communications to certain members and providers," Cigna spokesperson Sabrina Cheung told the publication in an email. "In some cases, personal information was inadvertently disclosed."
