Anthem CEO to Trump: ACA replacement plan needs 'enhanced' provisions to subsidies, Medicaid funding

Anthem CEO Joseph Swedish requested changes to the GOP's ACA replacement plan in a conversation with the Trump administration Tuesday, according to Bloomberg.

Mr. Swedish spoke with President Donald Trump and HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD, about parts of the American Health Care Act he thinks should be "enhanced." Those parts include ensuring the continuation of federal subsidies offsetting premium costs and sufficient funding for Medicaid, Anthem's CFO John Gallina told investors Wednesday, the report states.

The Indianapolis-based insurer's CEO also discussed provisions of the legislation Anthem favored, like repealing the ACA's health insurance tax, according to the report.

The meeting follows Mr. Swedish's letter to the House's Energy and Commerce Committee and Ways and Means Committee March 9, which highlighted "critically important" provisions put forth in the AHCA, including establishing the Patient and State Stability Fund, repealing the ACA's health insurance tax, maintaining the ACA's cost sharing reduction subsidies and allowing the use of tax credits for health plans sold off public exchanges. Both committees have since approved the AHCA.

Mr. Gallina did not say if President Trump and Mr. Swedish discussed the insurer's appeal of the court's decision to block its $54 billion merger with Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna, according to Bloomberg.
