American Indian, Alaska Native uninsured rate drops, still least insured demographic

American Indian and Alaska Native populations have seen a 16 percentage point decrease in their uninsured rate, but still remain the least insured demographic, according to an Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation study

Between 2010 and 2018, the uninsured rate for this group dropped from 44 percent to 28 percent for those under 65.

However, in 2019, the demographic of nearly 5.7 million people was still the most uninsured group in the country. About 15 percent of all American Indians and Alaska Natives were uninsured.

The study noted social determinants of health such as poverty and unemployment tie into the demographic coverage gap. It also pointed to the American Rescue Plan and Medicaid expansion as key to driving down the demographic's uninsured population.
