Alameda Health System in contract dispute with major insurer

Oakland, Calif.-based Alameda Health System is in a contract dispute with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California, according to a San Jose Mercury News report.

The health system's contracts with the insurer expired at the end of 2015, and the parties are yet to reach new payment arrangements.

Alameda Health System includes Highland Hospital in Oakland, Alameda (Calif.) Hospital, San Leandro (Calif.) Hospital, John George Psychiatric Hospital and Fairmont Hospital, both in San Leandro, and several wellness clinics.

Bonnie Panlasigui, chief administrative officer of Alameda Hospital, told the San Jose Mercury News she hopes patients will pressure their insurance companies to negotiate new reimbursement rates.

Sean Barry, a representative for Blue Shield, said the carrier tried to continue its contract with Alameda Health System and proposed adding Highland Hospital and San Leandro Hospital to its network, according to the report. However, attempts to negotiate a new contract were not successful.
