AHIP CEO outlines the insurance industry's fight against 'Medicare for All'

America's Health Insurance Plan's CEO spoke about how the industry trade group is pushing for more incremental changes rather than a "Medicare for All" policy that would eliminate private insurers in an interview with The Hill.

Matt Eyles, CEO of AHIP, told The Hill: "Medicare for All, in my perspective, is really sort of the analog to repeal and replace. It sounds good as a slogan. It's really hard to do, and there's a lot of problems when you think about it."

Mr. Eyles said insurers know there is growing frustration around how the healthcare system currently operates. He said instead of Medicare for All, health insurers are implementing incremental changes to meet member demands. These changes include lowering drug prices and helping patients avoid surprise medical bills from out-of-network physicians.

"We need to do a better job of educating people, to make sure that they understand what it is that we're doing," Mr. Eyles said. He pointed to private insurers' use of new technology to maintain healthiness among their members, like connecting members with physicians via telehealth, as ways the insurance industry is attempting to resolve some discontent.
