Aetna says changes to Medicare, Medicaid under ACA replacement could hurt bottom line

Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna said its Medicare and Medicaid businesses could be adversely affected if the GOP's ACA replacement bill is approved, according to the Hartford Courant.

Aetna said Medicare and Medicaid products represented 48 percent of its of total healthcare premiums in 2016, according to an annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The insurer said while it can't predict what new regulations will look like, the changes could unfavorably affect Aetna's bottom line. The payer said it's "not possible to eliminate the adverse impact of public policy changes that would fundamentally change the dynamics of our industry" including "the federal or one or more state governments fundamentally restructuring or reducing the funding available for Medicare, Medicaid, or dual eligible programs, changing the tax treatment of health or related benefits, or repealing or otherwise significantly altering the ACA."
