Abortion coverage limited in most state ACA marketplaces: 5 things to know

More than 30 states have limited availability of abortion coverage in their Affordable Care Act health insurance marketplaces, according to a new Kaiser Family Foundation analysis.

Here are five things to know about findings in the analysis.

1. The analysis found 25 states either bar abortion coverage in ACA marketplace plans or limit it to cases of rape or incest or when the woman's life is endangered.

2. In six states — Delaware, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, West Virginia and Wyoming — no ACA plans offer abortion coverage despite the fact there are no laws restricting it, the analysis found.

3. Texas, Illinois and Colorado each have at least one plan that includes abortion coverage, but these plans are not available in all state counties.

4. The Office of Personnel Management requires every multistate plan issuer to offer at least one Gold and one Silver plan that excludes abortion coverage in each marketplace they offer coverage, according to the analysis. However, states are not required to have multistate plans available until next year.

5. In Hawaii and Vermont, all of the marketplace plans include abortion coverage because there are no multistate plans yet available.
