50k more people will lose health plans before November elections

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act may have ebbed as a midterm elections issue, but nearly 50,000 Americans losing their current health coverage in the coming weeks due to the health reform may swing some voters, according to a report by The Hill.

The cancellations this fall are due largely to state regulators only allowing the "keep your plan" fix to last one year, according to the report. Also, some insurers have just decided to stop offering the old policies on their own.

Cancellations announced by insurance departments and providers will affect 50,000 residents in a number of states, including Alaska, Colorado, Kentucky, Maine, New Mexico, North Carolina and Tennessee.

In Kentucky alone, nearly 14,000 people are likely to lose their health plans, many of which are offered by the health insurer Humana.
