4 things to know about Tennessee's 2017 ACA marketplace

Like much of the country, Tennessee's Affordable Care Act exchanges are changing in 2017.

Here are four things to know about the state's ACA marketplace for next year, according to The Tennessean.

1. Only three insurers will offer plans. Although UnitedHealthcare dropped Tennessee's exchanges, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Cigna and Humana will offer plans.

2. Premiums will likely increase. Last year, BCBS of Tennessee boosted premium rates by 36 percent and Humana hiked rates by almost 16 percent. Even Cigna raised premium rates, though it was only by 0.4 percent.

3. The insurers offering coverage will have more insight into Tennessee enrollees. Despite increases in premium prices, this year marks the third year of ACA coverage in the state. Therefore, now that the payers "have more data and a better sense of costs, they can — hopefully — better align their prices and expenses, and provide the most cost-efficient insurance products to Tennessee consumers," according to the report.

4. Cost sharing will increase. The Tennessean predicts that consumers in the state will have to pay more out-of-pocket costs — whether in the form of copays, coinsurance or deductibles — for their care.
