If Democrats win six gubernatorial races, 2.4 million more Americans could gain coverage via Medicaid expansion, according to an Avalere analysis featured by The Hill.
Those states are Florida, Georgia, Kansas, South Dakota, Maine and Wisconsin. The elections are considered a "toss up" by Cook Political Report, according to The Hill. However, even if a Democrat wins the gubernatorial election in these states, the state legislature will need to be on board with Medicaid expansion for it to pass, the report notes.
Three other states — Idaho, Nebraska and Utah — will allow voters to choose if they want to expand Medicaid. If approved in these states, 325,000 people would gain Medicaid coverage.
