The inmate, Joshua Wright, was seeking care at the Kyle, Texas-based hospital when he allegedly assaulted the corrections officer and began running through the emergency room, according to a statement from the Hays County (Texas) Sheriff’s Office.
The corrections officer shot the inmate after the assault. ER staff immediately provided emergency treatment, but he died from his injuries, according to the report.
The Texas Department of Public Safety’s investigative team is looking into the incident, and the corrections officer has been placed on administrative leave. Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra also requested the sheriff’s office release all body cam footage from the situation by Dec. 22, citing differing accounts from witnesses, according to NBC affiliate KXAN.
