OSF St. Joseph hospital delays elective surgeries during power outage

Bloomington, Ill.-based OSF St. Joseph Medical Center lost power the morning of May 30 when two lines feeding electricity to the campus failed, prompting the hospital to postpone certain elective surgeries until repairs were made, The Bloomington Pantagraph reports.

While elective surgeries at St. Joseph, Eastland Medical Plaza SurgiCenter and Eye Surgical Associates were postponed, backup generators allowed the hospital to continue essential services. No patients had to be transferred.

“Elective surgeries and procedures are on hold, but emergency services/procedures are available,” Karen Brodbeck, a spokesperson for OSF HealthCare, told The Pantagraph. “Our emergency department is open and functioning normally.”

Patients with elective surgeries or procedures scheduled for May 30 and May 31 were contacted.

The power went out around 6:30 a.m. May 30. Full power was restored to the facility early May 31. Elective surgeries scheduled for May 31 are expected to occur as scheduled, according to centralillinoisproud.com.
