The hospital experienced a campuswide power outage around 4:40 p.m. after a tree limb fell, immediately triggering a generator to kick in. Within 30 minutes the backup generator failed, a hospital spokesperson said. Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center then switched to a second, smaller generator, which also failed.
The hospital was completely without power for two minutes.
Once power was restored, it took two hours for the entire hospital system to come back online.
One patient was transferred, and 14 elective surgeries were canceled as a result of the power outage.
“In response to the situation, we determined it was in the best interest of our patients and our people to postpone elective surgeries, elective procedures and to transfer any emergent cases coming in to our emergency department to our partner hospitals, if they could be safely moved,” CVPH President & COO Michelle LeBeau told NBC 5.
