Montana healthcare execs raise $1.2M to launch patient engagement startup

A team of healthcare executives from Missoula, Mont., cinched $1.2 million in funding to launch a technology-based startup, according to the Missoulian.

The startup, PatientOne, aims to improve surgical patient outcomes through patient engagement and education services . PatientOne will offer its services to independent surgeons, surgery centers and hospitals.

Former St. Patrick Hospital CEO Jeff Fee, Five Valleys Urology Administrator John O'Connor and software expert Erik Guzik created the digital health company to reduce risks, communication errors and complications that arise before, during and after surgery.

After patients sign up for the startup's services, they get small amounts of educational information delivered throughout the surgical timeline, from information on how to prepare for the procedure to postoperative care instructions. The hope is that the bits of information do not overwhelm the patients, while also keeping them on track for surgery.

Patients are required to interact wit the system, checking off list items when completed. Providers are alerted if a patient fails to indicate tasks are completed. Hospitals, surgery centers and surgeons can then reach out to patients to get them back on track.

PatientOne plans to hire five more employees, including a medical content manager, as it continues to grow.
