A Brigham and Women’s Hospital plastic surgery team performed the first full-face transplant in the country last week, according to a hospital news release.
The team of more than 30 physicians, nurses, anesthesiologists and residents worked for more than 15 hours to replace the facial area of patient Dallas Wiens, including the nose, lips, facial skin, muscles of facial animation and the nerves that power them and provide sensation.
According to a Chicago Tribune news report, Mr. Wiens’ facial features were burned off after coming in contact with a high-voltage wire in 2008. He is expected to regain sensation in his right-side forehead and cheek. Sensation will not as likely return to Mr. Wiens’ left-side forehead and cheek, where the most severe damage was done, according to the news report.
