Mayo Clinic to launch surgical AI initiative

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic is developing a computer vision model to detect surgical site infections and postoperative wound complications across specialties as part of an initiative to advance AI in the operating room.

Mayo Clinic was selected as one of the first honorees of Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Polyphonic AI Fund for Surgery QuickFire Challenge, according to an Oct. 27 news release from the company. Another award recipient, QAS.AI, is building intraoperative decision support tools for vascular procedures.

The QuickFire Challenge drew submissions from 29 countries and focused on projects using AI to improve surgical precision, reduce variability and strengthen data governance. Awardees will receive funding, expert mentorship and potential access to computing tools and technologies.
