In a case study by Surgical Directions, a community hospital was faced with flat surgical volume, poor community image, surgeon dissatisfaction and inefficient perioperative processes. Surgical Directions implemented the following measures to improve performance:

•    Revised the surgical services department’s structure.
•    Established new leadership models in the department.
•    Created collaborative relationships among OR team members.
•    Improved patient flow.
•    Developed new preoperative assessments.
•    Improved materials and supply flow.

These changes resulted in a 12 percent increase in surgical volume and a $6 million increase in profits in one year, in addition to increased surgeon satisfaction and patient throughput.
