Harper University Hospital, part of Detroit Medical Center, is planning to complete a two-year, $18 million operating room expansion project before launching process improvement initiatives, according to a Crain’s Detroit Business report.
The expansion is one of the first projects funded by Vanguard Health Systems, DMCs new owner. Construction will expand Harper’s ORs from 350-510 square feet to between 800 and 1,200 square feet, reducing the number of main ORs from 20 to 16. The industry standard for an OR is now a minimum of 600 square feet.
The new OR suite is expected to boost patient and physician satisfaction scores to the mid-90 percentiles, according to the report. Once it is complete in 2013, Harper will launch an OR process improvement project to increase efficiency and volume.
