Study Suggests Cancer Care Costs Exceed Medicare Reimbursements

Payments from Medicare do not cover the costs of providing infusion services in community oncology practices, and many oncology offices may be losing money on some of the key services they provide, according to the results of a new survey commissioned by the Community Oncology Alliance.

The study, conducted by consulting firm Avalere Health for the COA, surveyed oncology practices about the infusion-related services they provide and the costs associated with those services. Some 76 practices representing 680 providers responded to the survey.

Comparing Medicare payments to practice costs, the survey showed that practices receive payment equal to 56.53 percent of the costs they incur, according to an Avalere press release.  Among the services that may not be directly reimbursed by Medicare are patient and family counseling, nutrition advice, care coordination with other providers, palliative care and telephone counseling, among others.
