U.S. cancer deaths fell by a record 2.4 percent between 2017 and 2018, leading to an overall 31 percent drop since 1991, according to the American Cancer Society's 2021 Cancer Statistics report published Jan. 12. 

New York Proton Center in New York City named Jonathan Weinbach CEO Jan. 13. Mr. Weinbach is the center's former CFO. 

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation named seven early career scientists as recipients of its 2021 Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award, which funds projects that have the potential to transform the areas of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Japanese researchers have identified what is believed to be the first reported cases of women vaginally transmitting cervical cancer to their infants via birth, according to a case study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. 

Cancer survivors may be at increased risk of heart disease since their hearts more often appear older than their actual age in comparison to those who haven't had cancer, according to a Jan. 8 CDC report.
