Medicaid Covers Most ED Visits for Infants Younger Than 1 Year

Most emergency department visits for infants younger than 1 year were billed to Medicaid in 2010, according to a statistical brief from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

ED visits for infants younger than 1 year were covered primarily by private insurance and Medicaid in 2010. The distribution, according to the brief, was as follows:

•    Medicaid — 66 percent of ED visits was covered by this payer.
•    Private insurance — 25 percent of ED visits were covered by these payers.
•    Uninsured — 6 percent of ED visits were not covered by any payer.
•    Others (includes Medicare) — 3 percent of ED visits were covered by these payers.
