Gallup: 43% of Uninsured Americans Oblivious to Coverage Mandate

Forty-three percent of uninsured Americans are unaware that they will be required to buy health insurance coverage under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a recent Gallup poll.

The poll also found that 75 percent of Americans are somewhat or very familiar with the PPACA, though the discrepancy between this result and the result concerning coverage purchase requirements suggests that education efforts concerning the PPACA have not been as successful as the administration might have hoped.

According to Kaiser, about 16 percent of the American population is uninsured. Results from the Gallup poll indicate that a little over 40 percent of the uninsured say that this is because of the cost or their perception of the cost of health insurance.

The new insurance marketplace will be open for business starting Oct. 1, and those who are still uninsured have until the end of the calendar year to purchase coverage.
