U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin to Resign

U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, MD, will resign next month, according to a CNN report.

“My goal was to create a grassroots movement, to change our health care system from one focused on sickness and disease to a system focused on wellness and prevention. With your help, that movement has begun,” Dr. Benjamin wrote in an email to staff announcing her retirement, according to the report.

 

Dr. Benjamin has served as Surgeon General since 2009, according to the report.

 

Deputy Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak, MD, will serve as interim Surgeon General, according to the report.
