Medicaid May Be on Debt Reduction Committee's Chopping Block After All

Although Medicaid has been reported to be off the table in debt reduction talks, Families USA, a non-profit healthcare advocacy group, argues Congressional members of the debt reduction committee may seek cuts to the program after all, according to The Hill report.

Families USA argued most Republican committee members supported converting Medicaid funds into block grants. One of the Republican committee members, Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) reported the committee would not propose any cuts to Medicare or Social Security but did not mention Medicaid, according to the report.

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chair of the Finance Committee, is largely expected to fight GOP efforts to cut into healthcare reform. However, he has expressed openness to President Obama's proposal of changing the way Medicaid reimbursements to healthcare providers are calculated, according to the report.
