House Democrats to Obama: Don't Touch Entitlements

In a letter to President Barack Obama signed by a majority of House Democrats, 107 lawmakers told the president to remain steadfast in protecting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits and back away from altering the chained consumer price index formula used to calculate cost-of-living increases in the programs.

The letter, led by U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), stated the authors "remain deeply opposed" to offers considered by the president to shrink the formula, effectively lowering the funding available to Social Security in the future.

"We remain committed to making the changes that will extend solvency for 75 years, but Social Security has not contributed to our current fiscal problems and it should not be on the bargaining table," the letter read.
