Alabama, Georgia Join Others in Study of Insurance Exchanges

More states are joining the trend of creating commissions or groups to study insurance exchanges, a provision in the healthcare reform law, according to several news reports.

Facing a deadline of 2014, states are required to set up insurance exchanges that would allow individuals and businesses to shop and compare various health plans. If these exchanges are not implemented by the 2014 deadline, the federal government will require tardy states to implement a federally established exchange.

Robert Bentley, governor of Alabama, recently announced a group will be formed to study approaches in how to launch an insurance exchange, including how to establish a governing board and what resources are needed to carry out the exchange, according to a news report by The Republic.

Nathan Deal, governor of Georgia, has also issued an executive order that would establish a similar group to study insurance exchanges. This advisory committee would comprise 26 members, who will report their recommendations to the governor toward the end of this year, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution news report.

Govs. Bentley and Deal's move closely fellow Oklahoma Sen. Gary Stanislawski (R-Tulsa) and Rep. Glen Mulready (R-Tulsa), who have been chosen to lead a legislative committee that will study health insurance exchanges in their respective state.
