10 States Crucial to PPACA Exchange Enrollment

Whether or not health insurance exchange enrollment under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act hits 6 million by the end of this month depends on 10 states, according to a Kaiser Health News report.

Earlier this week, CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner wrote in a blog post that PPACA exchange enrollment has hit 5 million. That's up from roughly 4.2 million enrollees as of March 1, according to HHS. Still, the exchanges will need to enroll 1 million more to reach the most recent Congressional Budget Office estimate.

Of the 47 million uninsured people the PPACA seeks to reach, nearly 30 million reside in the following 10 states, seven of which Republicans control, according to the report. Only two of the states — California and New York — are running their own exchanges. Here is a full list of the 10 states, along with the estimated number of potential exchange enrollees in each state, based on data from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

1. California (3.3 million)

2. Texas (3.1 million)

3. Florida (2.5 million)

4. Pennsylvania (1.3 million)

5. New York (1.3 million)

6. North Carolina (1.1 million)

7. Georgia (1.1 million)

8. Illinois (937,000)

9. Virginia (823,000)

10. Ohio (812,000)
