60 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs headed into 2023

Becker's Hospital Review is pleased to release its top oncology hospitals. The hospitals and health systems featured on this list have earned recognition nationally as top cancer care providers and many are on the cutting edge of novel therapies and research to improve outcomes and access to care.

The hospitals and health systems below are among the vanguard of cancer treatment and research in the country. Many of them have earned National Cancer Institute comprehensive cancer center designation and are ranked among the top hospitals for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report.

The list also features cancer centers with busy research institutes, multiple clinical trials and safety designations that exceed national benchmarks. Hospitals and health systems listed below are dedicated to expanding their oncology departments and regional cancer centers to improve patient care locally and nationally. AdventHealth Orlando (Orlando, Fla.). The AdventHealth Cancer Institute provides patients with the latest cancer techniques along with an impressive group of specialized physicians. AdventHealth Orlando has a wide range of clinical trials which gives patients lots of advanced options. Clinicians provide comprehensive and specialized care such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Atlantic Health System (Morristown, N.J.). Atlantic Health System provides a range of services for over 6,000 cancer patients each year, including access to specialists, clinical trials, groundbreaking technologies, innovative treatments and caring support services. The health system spans 11 counties across the northern and central region of the state. Its flagship Carol G. Simon Cancer Center is located at Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Center, and full oncology programs are present at Chilton Medical Center, Hackettstown Medical Center and Newton Medical Center. The system is deeply involved in cancer research, with its Atlantic Health Cancer Consortium increasing patients' ability to enroll in clinical trials with an emphasis on prevention, screening, care, treatment and quality of life.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston). The clinical team at the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center work towards eliminating cancer. It has 18 specialized clinical teams that work along their Cancer Research Institute to provide the best treatment possible. With a wide variety of treatments and specializations, BIDMC is a top-ranked cancer center in the county, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Cedars-Sinai (Los Angeles). The Cedars-Sinai cancer center treats over 60 types of cancer at 10 locations throughout Los Angeles. The health system's researchers and clinicians participate in 200 cancer clinical trials at any one time. Siteman reports 160,000 outpatient visits annually and its wide-ranging cancer clinical faculty includes 140 physicians.

Children’s Mercy Kansas City (Kansas City, Mo.). Children's Mercy Kansas City is nationally ranked for 2022-23 as one of the Best Children's Hospitals for Cancer and Cancer Research by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital has more than 25 pediatric hematology and oncology doctors on staff. It is also home to The Children’s Mercy Research Institute which integrates research and clinical care with multidisciplinary teams at the point of care while bringing together nationally recognized expertise in genomic medicine, precision therapeutics, population health and health care innovation.

Children's Minnesota (Minneapolis, Minn.) Children's Minnesota is a leader in treating cancer and blood disorders and is known across the country for its aggressive management of pain and treatment side effects. Children's Minnesota is the largest pediatric cancer and blood disorders program in the Upper Midwest, caring for more than 58 percent of children diagnosed with cancer or blood disorders in Minnesota, and 74 percent of those diagnosed in the Twin Cities. The hospital ranks in the top 15 pediatric programs in the U.S. in both medical and surgical cancer outcomes, according to the Pediatric Health Information Systems database.

City of Hope (Duarte, Calif.). City of Hope is a leader in bench-to-bedside care and is one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the country. The health system delivers optimal cancer care to patients facing a wide array of cancer diagnoses and associated circumstances. Through its leadership of the Cancer Care is Different coalition, COH supports systemic change to increase access to specialized cancer care for underserved populations. The Cancer Treatment Centers of America are also part of the City of Hope network.

Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland). The Cleveland Clinic hematology and medical oncology center includes programs for specific disease or treatments of head and neck cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, genitourinary cancer, sarcoma, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, blood and marrow transplantation, disorders of the blood, and management of rare cancers. They have more than 700 physicians, researchers, nurses and technicians that care for thousands of patients every year. Cleveland Clinic is ranked as one of the nation's top cancer centers by U.S. News & World Report.

Covenant Health (Knoxville, Tenn). Covenant Health provides comprehensive services in Tennessee and includes 10 hospitals; outpatient services and clinics; specialized care in oncology, behavioral and rehabilitation services; home care, physician practices and community programs. The Thompson Cancer Survival Center offers cancer services at nine sites in partnership with six of Covenant Health's hospitals. TCSC and Thompson Oncology Group, an employed physician group affiliated with Covenant Health, use a multidisciplinary team approach to deliver life-saving cancer treatments.

Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center (Houston). The Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center combines all of Baylor St. Luke's cancer research and treatment capabilities under one center. Their research portfolio has grown to more than $180 million for cancer research compared to less than $100 million in 2007. The health system's specialists are dedicated to providing the best care for patients and ending the disease.

Dana-Farber / Brigham and Women's Cancer Center (Boston). The Dana Farber Brigham Cancer Center has more than 40 independent research laboratories. In addition to a research chemotherapy unit that conducts some of the most sophisticated clinical trials, the center boasts 240 faculty members. Their efforts include 19 clinical divisions focused on a diverse practices for oncology medicine.

Duke Health (Durham, N.C.). The Duke Cancer Center is a cutting-edge care facility that brings many services into one convenience center. It is in the top 4 percent of U.S.cancer centers and has ongoing clinical trials to help advanced cancer care.

Emory University Hospital (Atlanta). Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. The center sees over 17,000 new patients each year and does groundbreaking research to improve options and care. In 2021, researchers at Winship conducted over 300 therapeutic clinical trials to advance cancer care.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at University of Washington Medical Center (Seattle). The Fred Hutch Cancer Center is the only NCI-recognized cancer center in Washington. It has 45 years of research, 700 clinical trials and studies, and 10 years ranked as a top cancer hospital. The center has a goal of working closely together and accelerating discoveries that prevent, treat and defeat cancer.

Fox Chase Cancer Center (Philadelphia). The Fox Chase Cancer Center at Temple Health has been a leading cancer center for many years. Its research combines discovery science with state-of-the-art clinical care and population health. Last year, Fox Chase researchers produced a study about a drug candidate that may help re-initiate immune response in patients whose cancer is unresponsive to immunotherapy which was published in the journal, Nature.

H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute (Tampa, Fla.). The Moffitt Cancer Institute is equipped with top research and care experts whose goal is to elevate care and save more lives by treating cancer more effectively. It has survival rates up to four times the national average and treats more than 100 different types of cancer.

Hackensack Meridian Health (Edison, N.J.). Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center comprises 16 subspecialized divisions, offering state-of-the-art technological advances, compassionate care, research innovations, medical expertise, and a full-range of survivorship services. Part of the NCI-designated Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University, the center recently expanded to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, with additional network focus on oncology at: The Children’s Cancer Institute at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical, JFK Medical Center, Ocean University Medical Center, The Booker Cancer Center at Riverview Medical Center, and Southern Ocean Medical Center. Toms River Regional Cancer Center and Saint Joseph's Health are also affiliated with the cancer center.

Houston Methodist Hospital (Houston). The Dr. Mary and Ron Neal Cancer Center at Houston Methodist provides exemplary care at seven locations throughout the Greater Houston area. Specialists use the latest research, treatments and technology to work towards ending cancer. It is a top ranked hospital in the nation and the number one hospital in Texas.

Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah (Salt Lake City). The Huntsman Cancer Institute is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Mountain West. It has 237 research teams studying every part of cancer. Huntsman has also provided patient and prevention education to more than 1 million residents from every state and six continents.

Johns Hopkins (Baltimore). The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins provides advanced care to its patients. The center treats more than 24 different cancers and provides a wide variety of services as well as dedicated facilities such as the David H. Koch Cancer Research Buildings. They have a wide variety of researchers with different expertise with more than 500 personnel.

Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, Calif.). The dedicated teams of cancer care specialists at Kaiser Permanente work together to support patients at every step of their cancer journey, from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship. In addition to providing the latest treatments and therapies, cancer patients have access to 24/7 self-care apps and mental health counseling to provide emotional support. Kaiser Permanente clinicians and scientists also participate in a broad range of research to advance the field, including clinical trials, federally funded research, and a genetics research program that is in the process of genotyping a cohort of more than 400,000 Kaiser Permanente members across the U.S.

Karmanos Cancer Institute (Detroit). Karmanos Cancer Institute, one of only 53 comprehensive cancer centers certified by the National Cancer Institute, offers 250 exclusive cancer treatments. Spanning across 15 locations throughout Michigan and Northern Ohio, the institute treats about 12,000 new patients each year. The institute implements multidisciplinary treatment teams, ensuring that patients receive care recommendations that reflect the knowledge of several specialties.

M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center (Minneapolis). The Masonic Cancer Clinic at Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center offers personalized cancer service for each patient. It is the main hub for the University of Minnesota Health cancer care services. M Health Fairview offers a wide array of specialized services and many different types of treatments such as infusion therapy and a long list of clinical trials.

Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston). The Mass General Cancer Center aims to provide excellent care for all types of cancer. The hospital combines advanced care, treatments and technologies to best serve their patients. Mass General has the only proton therapy site in New England and features 412 faculty who specialize in different kinds of cancer.

Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.). Mayo Clinic serves more than 120,000 patients each year. The system has 106 doctors across three locations that make up one of the most comprehensive oncology programs in the country. Mayo Clinic treats every kind of cancer and their cancer center includes nine NCI recognized programs such as gene and virus therapy, hematologic malignancies and neuro-oncology.

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (Washington, D.C.). MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is the D.C. region's only comprehensive cancer center as designated by NCI. MedStar offers a wide variety of programs to deal with all types of cancer and does research to further efforts to treat and fight cancer.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York City). Memorial Sloan Kettering was one of the first cancer centers to receive the NCI comprehensive cancer center designation in 1971. MSK has introduced multiple new technologies, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and precision medicine. Recently, this includes the development of immunotherapy drugs called checkpoint inhibitors and CAR T cells.

Montefiore Medical Center (New York City). The Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center is an NCI-designated cancer center that leverages new research and discoveries to provide life-saving treatments. It treats more than 200 types of cancer and has over 320 active clinical trials. The center has a multidisciplinary team that addresses the complex needs of each patient.

Mount Sinai Health System (New York City). The Tisch Cancer Center at Mount Sinai features more than 250 cancer specialists, surgeons and researchers working to provide care in New York City. Mount Sinai takes a coordinated approach of science and human compassion that allows it to be a top ranked center. Researchers and clinicians conduct clinical trials and combine the vast resources of the center for the good of its patients.

MUSC Hollings Cancer Center (Charleston, S.C.). MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Carolina. Specialists from more than 20 academic departments work together to study and treat cancer through three programs: the cancer biology and immunology, cancer control and therapeutics development. Clinicians and researchers also focus on cutting-edge research; the center supports more than 200 clinical trials and has an annual research funding portfolio of more than $44 million.

New York-Presbyterian (New York City). NewYork-Presbyterian is home to two national cancer centers, Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medicine Meyer Cancer Center.NewYork-Presbyterian specialists treat more than 30 conditions while providing multidisciplinary care. The system also has a Therapeutic Medicine Center which specializes in chemotherapy, biotherapy, infusion and hydration therapy, and infusion of blood and blood products.

Northwell Health (New York City). The experienced team at the Northwell Cancer Institute, the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center and the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Hospital are dedicated to cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, research and survivorship. The three centers together have more than 200 cancer specialists, 25 medical specialists and over 30 years of clinical trials. All these resources come together to provide excellent patient care.

Northwestern Medicine (Chicago). The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University treats more than 10,000 cancer cases each year and supports patients through diagnosis, treatment and recovery. It is a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report as having one of the top 10 cancer programs in the nation.

Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital (Columbus, Ohio). James Cancer Hospital features 275 world-renowned cancer researchers and sees more than 100,000 patients per year. It has state-of-the-art facilities and technology, clinicians, and researchers of Ohio State behind it which strives for the best targeted treatments for cancer.

OHSU Hospital-Knight Cancer Institute (Portland, Ore.). The Knight Cancer Institute employs some of the world’s most impressive cancer doctors. It treats about 6,000 patients a year and conducts 1,400 research projects, including over 400 clinical trials. OSU's research has led to advances in ways to fight cancer, aiding the goals to free the world from the burden of the disease.

O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB (Birmingham, Ala.). The O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in Alabama. The health system includes 400 scientists and physician scientists working together on groundbreaking discovery focused on cancer care. The center has more than 200 active clinical trials available to the 20,000 patients seen annually.

Orlando Health (Orlando, Fla.). As one of Florida's largest comprehensive cancer care providers with 16 locations across Central Florida, Orlando Health Cancer Institute has been providing exceptional cancer care to more than 100,000 adult patients for the last 28 years, combining the talents of the outstanding cancer doctors, top cancer researchers, and specialists with facilities and resources that are at the leading edge of cancer treatment and care. It also has the only proton therapy center in Central Florida, the Marjorie and Leonard Williams Center for Proton Therapy.

Penn Medicine (Philadelphia). The Penn Medicine hematology and oncology division includes three main clinical areas: hematological malignancies, solid tumor oncology and benign hematology. Penn Medicine's 100-plus specialists see 198,000 cancer patients per year. Academics and research are also important for Penn Medicine to further cancer detection and treatment. At Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center, there are more than 200 trials happening at any one time.

Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Hospitals (New York City). The Perlmutter Cancer Center treats a wide variety of cancers. Their investigators also conduct research studies to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer backed up by a diverse clinical trial portfolio. The center serves a diverse population in more than 20 locations across New York City.

Providence (Renton, Wash.). Providence patient care teams collaborate to provide holistic care to patients during their cancer care journeys. The multidisciplinary teams develop personalized care plans and have access to cutting-edge treatments and clinical trials. The health system's clinicians and researchers are focused on clinical trials with innovative diagnostics and molecular-based treatments.

Queen's Medical Center (Honolulu). The NCI-recognized Queen's Cancer Center sees 2,500 new patients each year, which is more than any other hospital in the Pacific. They provide a wide range of services to patients such as a survivorship program with management and monitoring, national clinical trials, social work, genetic counseling, psychiatry and more. They also have a variety of world-renowned cancer experts on their care team.

Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). The RushCancer Center crosses 20 departments at the Rush University Medical Center and represents all cancer-related clinical, research and educational efforts. It provides a wide variety of supportive care such as evidence-based integrative therapies, distress screening and psychological support. Rush has many clinical trials going on to give patients the most up-to-date treatments.

Sanford Health (Sioux Falls, S.D.). The Sanford Cancer Center was established in 1982 and has grown to be the place for the latest cancer treatments in the area. It takes part in clinical trials and cutting-edge research with other leading cancer institutions to bring leading technologies and treatment to the Sioux Falls area. The center has a wide variety of specialties from medical oncology to genetic counseling.

Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital at Medical City Plano (Texas). Medical City Plano is a 603-bed acute-care hospital located in Plano, Texas. With a medical team of more than 1,800 physicians, many of whom are top experts in their fields, Medical City Plano offers nearly 70 specialties and is the largest hospital in Collin County. The Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital at Medical City Plano is the only one of its kind in Collin County. It offers a variety of advanced treatment options. The hospital is a designated Intuitive Surgical robotic surgery "epicenter" for excellence in robotics surgery.

Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis). The Siteman Cancer Center treats 70,000 patients each year at its six care locations in the St. Louis region. The center is housed in a 107,422-square-foot-facility and strives to provide excellent care. Siteman's researchers and clinicians conduct more than 500 clinical trials to discover the effectiveness of different cancer treatments.

Sutter Health (Sacramento, Calif.) Sutter Health provides patients with compassionate, comprehensive and evidence-based oncologic care. The hospital’s integrated network includes 24 acute care hospitals and 200 clinics across Northern California. Their oncology program consists of 19 cancer centers and more than 144 Phase 1-4, industry and NCI-sponsored clinical trials of novel, investigational treatments. Sutter identified more than 12 cancer-specific quality metrics that reached desired targets, helping bring higher quality care to our cancer patients and resulting in center-of-excellence-type accreditation by accrediting bodies including the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center-University of Miami Hospital and Clinics (Miami). Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center-University of Miami Hospital is the only NCI-Designated Cancer Center in South Florida. It gives patients access to many types of care and has more clinical trials available than most hospitals in the Southeastern United States. The center also has more than 300 cancer-focused doctors and researchers focused on producing the treatment of tomorrow.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (Philadelphia). The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson is an NCI-designated cancer center. It uses a multidisciplinary approach to provide excellent care. It provides care for all types of cancer from more common cancers such as lung and prostate to less common cancers such as melanoma in the eyes.

UC Davis Medical Center (Sacramento, Calif.). The UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center is dedicated to serving patients and providing the best outcomes. Its clinical trials are one of the leading programs nationally. UC Davis connects patients with the latest cancer therapies as early as possible.

UC Health and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (Cincinnati). The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center is a collaboration among the University of Cincinnati, UC Health and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The center’s top priority is to do all it can to minimize the suffering and mortality associated with cancer in southwest Ohio. The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center is the only cancer center in the world using FLASH radiotherapy. Compared to conventional radiotherapy, FLASH radiotherapy is over 100 times faster and preclinical studies have shown better tumor control, reduced normal tissue toxicity and immunological advantage.

UC San Diego Health-Moores Cancer Center (San Diego). Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health sets treatment standards for more than 200 types of cancer and is a NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. It boasts more than 260 clinical trials, 450 cancer center members and 26 of the most referenced cancer researchers in the world.

UChicago Medicine (Chicago). The section of hematology and oncology at the University of Chicago is a large subspecialty section of the department of medicine. It has over 40 faculty members, 22 fellows and a professional staff of over 180 full or part time employees who care for patients in addition to participating in over 380 industry sponsored clinical trials. UChicago Medicine was nationally ranked by for cancer care and is in the process of designing a new 500,000-square-foot freestanding cancer center.

UCI Medical Center (Orange County, Calif.). The UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center provides all the necessary medical specialists, treatments and services needed for cancer patients. It is recognised by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative Certification Program for delivering the highest quality care. Physicians there also participate in cutting-edge clinical trials that include research into the trials of novel drugs, targeted therapeutics and cancer prevention.

UCLA Medical Center (Santa Monica, Calif.). UCLA Health's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center is recognized by NCI and provides a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. Some successful targeted therapies were developed in part by UCLA such as Herceptin, Gleevec, and Sprycel. The center has more than 350 physicians and scientists and encourages close collaboration among these different experts.

UCSF Health (San Francisco). The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is an NCI-designated facility with advanced programs and complete care programs to best serve patients. It serves patients in three different locations in addition to a growing network of affiliate locations. UCSF reports around 6,500 new adult and pediatric cancer diagnoses each year and supports 100,000 outpatient oncologic visits annually. UCSF also participates in more than 250 clinical trials, with 14 percent of adult and 54 percent of pediatric patients enrolled.

University Hospitals Health System (Cleveland). University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Wesley Center for Immunotherapy at UH Seidman Cancer Center is one of the few academic medical centers nationally to generate chimeric antigen receptor T, NK cell and other cell-based therapies on-site, which enables patients to have access to the latest therapies more quickly. Researchers at the center have also developed a novel approach to CAR T-cell therapy for B-cell cancers that triples the targeted antigens on cancer cells.

University of Kansas Hospital (Kansas City, Mo.). The University of Kansas Cancer Center is the region’s only NCI-designated center. It is nationally and internationally recognized for providing exemplary care. The center was awarded a five-year, $13.8 million grant to support its nearly 350 researchers and 150 disease-specific oncologists.

University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital (Lexington, Ky.). The Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky has dedicated treatment teams that coordinate care for all cancer diagnosis and care. The center has provided leading cancer care for over 30 years. Patients are offered the most advanced techniques in surgical, radiation and chemotherapeutic intervention.

University of Michigan Health Rogel Cancer Center (Ann Arbor, Mich). The Rogel Cancer Center at the University of Michigan Health offers a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. It is a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network which ensures consistent, high-quality and cost-effective cancer care. Clinicians treat a wide variety of cancer types to ensure comprehensive care.

University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston). The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is one of the world's most respected organizations devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. In 2022, they cared for 174,126 patients with their 22,088 employees, including 1,687 clinical residents. U.'s "Best Hospitals" rankings has named MD Anderson the nation's top hospital for cancer care. The institution has been named one of the nation's top two hospitals for cancer care every year since the survey began in 1990.

UPMC (Pittsburgh). The UPMC Hillman Cancer Center provides quality clinical care to more than 140,000 people each year. The center provides many treatment options and access to more than 570 clinical trials. UPMC also has 17 areas of care focus such as adult brain cancer, breast cancer, and multiple myeloma.

USC Norris Cancer Hospital - Keck Medic (Los Angeles). The Norris Cancer Comprehensive Center is a leader in cancer research and focused on 13 key areas of cancer treatment. The center has more than 200 faculty and is dedicated to best servicing patients with the latest from its laboratories and clinical trials. ranked USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center among the 50 best hospitals for cancer care in 2022-23.

UT Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas). The Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center combines more than 263 members and 36 departments to best serve the north Texas area.
