100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know — 2014

Becker's Hospital Review has named "100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know," a list based on individuals' experience in overseeing medical and quality affairs at their respective organizations.

The CMOs, CMIOs, physicians-in-chief and other CMO-equivalent titles listed here have demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in safety and quality and have contributed to excellence at their respective institutions.

Note: This list is not an endorsement of included hospitals, health systems or associated healthcare providers, and organizations cannot pay for inclusion on this list. Nominations were accepted. Hospital and health system CMOs are presented in alphabetical order.

Mohammed Shafeeq Ahmed, MD. COO and CMO of Baystate Mary Lane Hospital and Baystate Health Eastern Region (Springfield, Mass.). Dr. Ahemd joined Baystate in 2003 as Mary Lane Hospital chief of obstetrics/gynecology. He has previously served as vice president of medical staff. He now oversees medical operations at Mary Lane Hospital while serving on the senior leadership team for Baystate Health's Eastern region.

George J. Amrom, MD. Vice President for Medical Affairs at Hahnemann University Hospital (Philadelphia). Dr. Amrom was appointed to his position at Hahnemann in 1997. In addition to his position there, he serves as CQO, vice chair for the department of surgery and associate professor or surgery at the Drexel University College of Medicine (Philadelphia).

Ken Anderson, DO. Chief Medical Quality Officer of NorthShore University HealthSystem (Evanston, Ill.). Dr. Anderson has served as chief medical quality officer of NorthShore University HealthSystem since March 2008. He also serves as co-chair of the steering committee that governs the system's Center for Clinical and Research Informatics.

Michael Anderson, MD. CMO of University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital (Cleveland, Ohio). Dr. Anderson has been with Case pediatrics since 1997. Before being appointed CMO he served as vice president and associate CMO.

Joshua Adler, MD. CMO of UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital (San Francisco). In addition to his CMO duties, Dr. Adler is medical director of UCSF Ambulatory Care, overseeing UCSF's more than 90 ambulatory clinics.

David A. Ansell, MD. Senior Vice President of Clinical Affairs and CMO of Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). Before his current appointments, Dr. Ansell was a physician at Chicago-based John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County for nearly 20 years, an experience which prompted him to write the book "County: Life, Death, and Politics in Chicago's Public Hospitals." He is also associate dean of clinical affairs at Chicago's Rush Medical College.

Katrina Armstrong, MD. Physician-in-Chief of Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Medicine (Boston). Dr. Armstrong was appointed physician-in-chief, Massachusetts General Hospital's CMO equivalent, in 2013, succeeding the previous physician-in-chief of 17 years. Before the appointment, she served as chief of general medicine. She specializes in medical decision-making and genetic testing for breast cancer.

Stanley W. Ashley, MD, MBA. CMO and Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs of Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). Dr. Ashley was appointed CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2011, after having been with the hospital since 1997. He came to the hospital from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Ara Balkian, MD. Chief Medical Director of Inpatient Operations at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Balkian performs CMO-equivalent duties for Children's Hospital Los Angeles. He is also the medical director of the hospital's Access and Transfer Center, which places and transfers more than 12,000 patients every year.

Myron Berdischewsky, MD. Senior Vice President and Chief Medical and Quality Officer of Providence Health & Services (Renton, Wash.). Dr. Berdischewsky assumed his roles at Providence Health & Services in 2011. He came to the positions from a post as CMO of Providence Health & Services Southern California region.

James Biemer Jr., MD. President of Medical Staff at Providence (Ore.) St. Vincent Medical Center. Dr. Biemer was elected to his position in 2012. He is an internal medicine physician with an interest in aging and exercise.

Donald Bignotti, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Trinity Health (Livonia, Mich.). Dr. Bignotti assumed his current roles in 2011. Before then, he served as CMO of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, Mich. for six years.

William A. Bornstein, MD, PhD. Chief Quality Officer and CMO of Emory Health Care (Atlanta). Dr. Bornstein has Emory's CQO since 2003 and its CMO since 2006. He came to the system through Emory University Hospital-Midtown (Atlanta), formerly Emory Crawford Long Hospital, when he was appointed CQO and associated administrator in 1999. Dr. Bornstein is a board-certified internist and endocrinologist.

Albert Bothe Jr., MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Geisinger Health System (Danville, Pa.). Dr. Bothe joined Geisinger in 2006 and has served in several leadership positions, including chief quality officer and CMO of Geisinger Medical Center. 

Patrick J. Brennan, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of University of Pennsylvania Health System (Philadelphia). Dr. Brennan has served in his current capacity since 2005. Previously, he was chief of healthcare quality and patient safety at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He has been a University of Pennsylvania faculty member for the past 28 years.

Theresa Brennan, MD. CMO of University of Iowa Health Care (Iowa City). Dr. Brennan assumed the CMO position at the University of Iowa system in 2011. She specializes in cardiology and interventional cardiology and is an associate professor at the university.

Linda Butler, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs, CMO and CMIO of Rex Healthcare (Raleigh, N.C.). Dr. Butler was appointed to her current position of CMO in 2009. Before then, she practiced pediatrics for 13 years in Wake County, N.C.

Darrell A. Campbell Jr., MD. CMO of University of Michigan Health System (Ann Arbor). Dr. Campbell has been at the University of Michigan since 1979. As CMO, his particular interest is in patient safety, and he has worked with various organizations championing quality to implement quality programs across Michigan's hospitals.

F. Sessions Cole, MD. CMO of St. Louis (Mo.) Children's Hospital. Dr. Cole is also Director of Newborn Medicine at the St. Louis Children's Hospital. In addition to his duties as CMO, he performs pediatric research on neonatal respiratory system disorders.

Paul Convery, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO at Baylor Health Care System (Houston). Dr. Convery has been in his current positions at BHCS since 2006. He is a board-certified internist. He has previously served as executive vice president and CMO of SSM Health Care (Saint Louis, Mo.).

Jack L. Cox, MD. Chief Quality Officer of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian (Newport Beach, Calif.). Dr. Cox has been at Hoag since 2006, when he joined as CQO. While Hoag Memorial does not have a CMO position, Dr. Cox fulfills the duties a CMO would perform. Before his time at Hoag Memorial, Dr. Cox was vice president and CMO of Premier.

Todd Davis, MD. Vice President of Patient Safety and Quality & Medical Affairs Officer of CaroMont Health (Gastonia, N.C.). Dr. Davis oversees medical staff activities related to quality. He was promoted to his current position in 2012 after serving as vice president of medical affairs for CaroMont.

John Deledda, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Dr. Deledda serves in a CMO-equivalent role at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Before his current appointment, he served as chief of staff and was medical director of the emergency department for nearly six years. He practices emergency medicine.

Jeffrey DiLisi, MD. Vice President and CMO of Virginia Hospital Center (Arlington). Dr. DiLisi joined Virginia Hospital Center as a hospitalist and previously served as hospitalist medical director. Under his leadership, the hospital won the 2012 Crimson Physician Partnership Award from The Advisory Board Company for fostering a productive relationship with its physicians. Dr. DiLisi is an internist.

David A. DiLoreto, MD. CIO and Clinical Operations Officer of Presence Health (Chicago). Dr. DiLoreto joined Presence Health, formerly Resurrection Health Care, in his current position in 2009. Before then, he spent three years as senior vice president and CMO at Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Fla.

Michael K. Elliott, MD. Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Avera McKennan Health Center (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Dr. Elliott assumed the CMO position in 2011. Prior to his tenure as CMO, he served as medical director of Avera Children's Hospitals and Clinics. He has been at the system since 2002.

Stephan Evans, MD. Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of MedStar Health (Columbia, Md.). Dr. Evans joined MedStar in 1990. He assumed the position of executive vice president of medical affairs in 2009. He specializes in surgical education and quality improvement design.

Kenneth Fawcett, MD. CMO and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at Spectrum Butterworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.). Dr. Fawcett has been with Spectrum Butterworth since Butterworth Health Partners was formed as an employed physician group in 1997. He is an internal medicine physician.

Mike Finley, MD. Regional CMO of Christus St. Michael Health System (Texarkana, Texas). Dr. Finley oversees quality and patient safety activities at Christus St. Michael. He has served in the position for nearly 11 years, during which the hospital has won numerous awards for patient care and quality of care.

Gary R. Fleisher, MD. Physician-in-Chief of Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. Fleisher also serves as Boston Children's pediatrician-in-chief and chairman of the department of medicine. He practices pediatrics and emergency medicine.

Loring Flint, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Inova Health System (Falls Church, Va.). Dr. Flint has been with Inova Health System for more than a decade. Before coming to Inova Health, he spent 20 years at Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health, where he was CMO of the system and president of Baystate Medical Practices. 

Carol Freer, MD. CMO of Penn State Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center. Dr. Freer assumed the position of CMO for Penn State Hersey in 2012. She joined the hospital in 2008 as associate professor of medicine and director of hospitalist outreach. She was appointed vice chair for clinical affairs in 2009.

R. Wayne Gandee, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Carilion Clinic (Roanoke, Va.). Dr. Gandee has been with Carilion Clinic since 2006. He was appointed CMO in 2011. He is also an assistant professor of the department of radiology at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke.

Berc Gawne, MD. Vice President and CMO of The Christ Hospital (Cincinnati). Before becoming vice president and CMO of The Christ Hospital, Dr. Gawne served as CMO of the Central Illinois Region of Mokena, Ill.-based Provena Health.

Michael G. Glenn, MD. Physician in Chief, Medical Director and CMO of Virginia Mason Medical Center (Seattle). Dr. Glenn has been a clinician at Virginia Mason Medical Center since 1995. He became both physician in chief and medical director in 2007 and CMO in 2013.

Jonathan E. Gottlieb, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). Before being appointed to his current position in 2009, Dr. Gottlieb was CMO of St. Louis-based Barnes-Jewish Hospital and assistant vice chancellor for clinical affairs at Washington University's School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Leigh S. Hamby, MD. Executive Champion of Research Services and CMO of Piedmont Healthcare (Atlanta). Dr. Hamby was appointed as the executive champion of research services in 2011. In addition to executive champion and CMO positions, he also serves as executive vice president and chief quality officer.

Lee Hammerling, MD. CMO of ProMedica (Toledo, Ohio). Dr. Hammerling has served in various roles at ProMedica since 1983. He is also president of ProMedica Physicians and Continuum Services. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist.

David W. Hecht, MD, MS, MBA. Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs and CMO of Loyola University Health System (Chicago). Dr. Hecht was appointed to his positions in 2013 after serving as interim senior vice president for clinical affairs since early 2012. He has been at Loyola since 1988 and specializes in infectious diseases.

John Hensing, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Banner Health (Phoenix). Dr. Hensing has been with Banner Health since 1995, when he joined the system as a senior vice president. He was named to his current positions in 2009.

Peter N. Herbert, MD. CMO of Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Medical Center. In addition to his duties as CMO, Dr. Herbert is chief of staff and senior vice president for medical affairs. He has been with Yale-New Haven since 1991.

Michael Hunt, DO. CMO and CMIO of St. Vincent's Health Partners (Bridgeport, Conn.). Before serving in his current capacity, Dr. Hunt was CMIO at Mercy in St. Louis. He continues to see patients and is active in several professional organizations for osteopathic medicine and health IT while serving as both CMO and CMIO at St. Vincent's.

Michael D. Kelleher, MD. CMO of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital (Chicago). Dr. Kelleher was appointed CMO of the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in 2013 after serving as interim CMO starting in September 2012. He has previously served as the hospital's CMIO.

Mark Kline, MD. Physician-in-Chief of Texas Children's Hospital (Houston). Dr. Kline was appointed to his current position as physician-in-chief of Texas Children's Hospital and chair of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Dallas in 2009. He has been head of pediatric retrovirology there since 1997.

Charles A. Kravinko, MD. Chief Patient Safety Officer and CMO of Clinical Services of Lee Memorial Health System (Fort Myers, Fla.). Dr. Krivenko joined Lee Memorial Health System in 1998, moving from a position as vice president of system clinical services at Gwinnett Health System (Atlanta). He is a board certified family practitioner.

James LaBelle, MD. Corporate Senior Vice President and CMO of Scripps Health (San Diego). Named CMO of Scripps Health in 2013, Dr. LaBelle helps navigate physician partnerships under the move to new methods of care delivery. Prior to his appointment as CMO, he was corporate vice president of quality, physician co-management and medical management. Dr. LaBelle has practiced emergency medicine for more than 25 years.

Michael L. Langberg, MD. Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and CMO of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). In addition to his role as CMO, Dr. Langberg is senior vice president for medical affairs at Cedars-Sinai. He is also an adjunct professor of medicine at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine.

Richard S. Liebowitz, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (New York City). Dr. Liebowitz joined NewYork-Presbyterian in 2006 as vice president of medical affairs. Before becoming NewYork-Presbyterian's CMO in 2012, he was CMO of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.

Vicki LoPachin, MD. CMO of The Mount Sinai Medical Center (New York City). Dr. LoPachin was appointed to her current position January 2014. She came to The Mount Sinai Hospital, where she completed her internal medicine residency, from a post as medical director of North Shore University Hospital (Manhasset, N.Y.).

J. Richard Ludgin, MD, JD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Aurora BayCare Medical Center (Green Bay, Wis.). Dr. Ludgin is a physician, lawyer and consultant (formerly Navigant and The Bard Group) with expertise in performance excellence, medical staff affairs, healthcare regulation, and risk management. He has held a variety of executive positions at academic medical centers and community hospitals. He is an nephrologist.

John Lynch, MD. Vice President and CMO of Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis). Dr. Lynch was named CMO of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2009. He has been a member of the hospital's medical staff since 1995 and is also a faculty member of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Robert McIntyre, MD. Medical Staff President of University of Colorado at Aurora. In addition to his position as medical staff president, Dr. McIntyre also serves as vice-chair of the clinical effectiveness and patient safety committee, medical director of the surgical intensive care unit and director of trauma and emergency services.

Sonia Mehta, MD. CEO and CMO of Loretto Hospital (Chicago). Dr. Mehta has served as CEO and CMO at Loretto Hospital since 2012. She joined the hospital after serving as president and CEO of Hospital Sisters Health System Illinois/Wisconsin Medical Group in Springfield, Ill.

Gino Merli, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (Philadelphia). In addition to his other posts, Dr. Merli is the co-director of the Jefferson Vascular Center. He has been at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital since 1978, when he received his medical degree there.

Redonda Miller, MD, MBA. Vice President for Medical Affairs of The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). Dr. Miller serves a similar function as a CMO, overseeing medical staff and patient safety issues. She was appointed to her position in 2009. Before then she was Johns Hopkins' vice chair for clinical operations.

Thomas Miller, MD. Executive Director of Ambulatory Clinics and CMO of University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics (Salt Lake City). In addition to his duties as CMO, Dr. Miller also serves as a faculty member for the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. He has been at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics since completing his residency there in 1992.

David Moorhead, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Florida Hospital Orlando. Dr. Moorhead has been at Florida Hospital Orlando since 2006. Previously, he was CEO of Loma Linda (Calif.) University Medical Center, where he helped establish that institution's children's hospital.

Janice E. Nevin, MD, MPH. CMO of Christiana Care Health System (Wilmington, Del.). Dr. Nevin was appointed CMO in 2011. From 2008 to 2011, she was senior vice president and executive director of Christiana Care-Wilmington (Del.) and associate CMO of the system.

Andrew Norton, MD. CMO of Main Line Health (Bryn Mawr, Pa.). Dr. Norton has served as CMO of Main Line Health since mid 2012. Previously, Dr. Norton was senior vice president of medical affairs and CMO for Milwaukee, Wis.-based Froedtert Hospital.

Thomas A. Owens, MD. CMO of Duke University Health System (Durham, N.C.). Dr. Owens has been at Duke since 1999. Before assuming the CMO position, he was CMO of Duke University Hospital and chief of hospital medicine there.

Barbara R. Paul, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Community Health Systems (Franklin, Tenn.). Dr. Paul became senior vice president and CMO of Community Health Systems in 2006. She is a board-certified internal medicine physician.

Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD. President of Clinical Services and CMO of Hospital Corporation of America (Nashville, Tenn.). Dr. Perlin has been at HCA in his current capacity since 2006. Before his appointment there, he was secretary for health in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and CEO of the Veterans Health Administration.

Robert Phillips, MD, PhD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Houston Methodist. Dr. Phillips joined Houston Methodist in 2013. He previously served as senior vice president at Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Memorial Medical Center. In addition to his CMO and executive vice president positions, Dr. Phillips is also president and CEO of the Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group.

Irving Pike, MD. CMO of John Muir Health (Walnut Creek, Calif.). Dr. Pike is John Muir Health's first CMO. He joined the health system in 2012 from Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Healthcare, where he was vice president for medical affairs.

John Pirolo, MD. CMIO and CMO at St. Thomas Health (Nashville, Tenn.). Dr. Pirolo was recently appointed CMO at St. Thomas. He has held the position of CMIO at the system since 2004. He specializes in cardiac surgery.

John Popovich, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Henry Ford Health System (Detroit). Dr. Popovich came to Henry Ford Health System in 1980. He was appointed CMO of the system in 2012. He is also president and CEO of Henry Ford Hospital (Detroit).

Robert A. Press, MD, PhD. CMO of NYU Langone Medical Center (New York City). A NYU Langone faculty member since 1978, Dr. Press was appointed CMO in 2007. He is an infectious diseases specialist.

Marlon Priest, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Bon Secours Health System (Marriottsville, Md.). Before Dr. Priest joined Bon Secours in 2006, he served as a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Alabama Birmingham and surgery and chief quality officer of UAB Hospital. At Bon Secours he is responsible for innovations in quality and patient safety.

Andrew Racine, MD, PhD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Montefiore Medical Center (New York City). Dr. Racine has been at Montefiore since 1992, when he joined the hospital as chief of general pediatrics. He oversees quality, safety, medical affairs and graduate medical education across the Montefiore Medical Group's 22 sites.

Roger A. Ray, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Carolinas HealthCare System (Charlotte, N.C.). Dr. Ray joined Carolinas HealthCare in 2007. Previously, he served as chief quality officer of Clearwater, Fla.-based BayCare Health System. 

Mack Reavis, MD. President and CMO of Lakeland (Fla.) Regional Medical Center. Dr. Reavis has 34 years of experience at LRMC. He became executive vice president of clinical integration and CMO in 2011. He was then named president in 2012.

Craig D. Rhyne, MD. CMO of Covenant Health System (Lubbock, Texas). Dr. Rhyne became CMO of Covenant Health System in April 2011. A board-certified surgeon, he has served in several leadership roles at the system, including medical director of trauma and chair of the Trauma Peer Review Committee and the Trauma Section Committee. 

Norman Rizk, MD. Medical Director of Stanford (Calif.) University Medical Center. In addition to serving in a CMO-equivalent position, Dr. Rizk is a senior associate dean of clinical affairs in Stanford's school of medicine. He is trained in pulmonology and critical care.

John T. Rosenthal, MD. Associate Vice Chancellor and CMO of UCLA Health (Los Angeles). Dr. Rosenthal has been with UCLA since 1986, when he joined as director of renal transplantation. He was appointed CMO in 1999 and associate vice chancellor of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 2003.

Jeffrey M. Rothenberg, MD. CMO of IU Health University Hospital (Indianapolis). Appointed to the position in 2013, Dr. Rothenberg has been a clinician at IU Health since 1996. He is an associate professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology and is co-chair of the Indiana University School of Medicine's Development Coordinating Committee.

Loring Rue, MD. Chief Patient Safety and Clinical Effectiveness Officer of University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital. Dr. Rue has been with UAB since 1983, when he began his internship there. He serves in the same capacity as a CMO and is a trauma surgeon at the 908-bed hospital.

Lee Sacks, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Advocate Health Care (Downer's Grove, Ill.). In addition to serving as Advocate Health Care's CMO, Dr. Sacks is the CEO of Advocate Physician Partners. He has also served as chairman of the Institute for Clinical Quality and Value.

Kenneth Sands, MD, MPH. Senior Vice President of Health Care Quality and CQO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston). Dr. Sands is senior vice president of healthcare quality for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He holds the responsibilities of a CMO in his role at the hospital and is board certified in internal medicine.

Ihor S. Sawczuk, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center. Before serving in his current capacity, Dr. Sawczuk served as HackensackUMC's vice president, chief academic officer, chairman of the department of urology and chief of the division of urologic oncology at HackensackUMC's John Theurer Cancer Center. He was named executive vice president and CMO of HackensackUMC in 2011.

Angela Scioscia, MD. CMO of UCSD Health System (San Diego, Calif.). Dr. Scioscia joined UCSD Health System in 1989. She has been CMO of UCSD Health System since 2004. She is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist.

Thomas P. Sculco, MD. Surgeon-in-Chief of Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Dr. Sculco is the CMO equivalent at Hospital for Special Surgery. He also serves as chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

M. Michael Shabot, MD. CMO of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System (Houston). Before becoming CMO, Dr. Shabot was Memorial Hermann's chief quality officer. In addition to his appointment at Memorial Hermann, Dr. Shabot serves as an adjunct professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. He is a general surgeon.

Steven Shapiro, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of UPMC. Dr. Shapiro has been with UPMC since 2006. He came to the hospital after serving as chief of Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital's pulmonary and critical care medicine departments. He is also president of the physician services division at UPMC.

Joseph W. St. Gerne III, MD. Physician-in-Chief of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. St. Gerne was named to his position in 2013. Previously he was CMO and chairman of pediatrics at Duke Children's Hospital (Durham, N.C.).

Paul Summerside, MD. President of the Board of Managers of Aurora BayCare Medical Center and CMO of BayCare Health System (Green Bay, Wis.). Dr. Summerside has been CMO of BayCare Health System and president of the board of managers for Aurora BayCare Medical Center since 1999. He is an emergency physician.

Andrew Thomas, MD. Senior Associated Vice President of Health Sciences and CMO of Ohio State Wexner Medical Center (Columbus). Dr. Thomas was appointed to his position as CMO of the hospital system and its physician practices in 2013. He is the second CMO the organization has ever appointed. He specializes in internal medicine.

Greg Thompson, MD. CMO of Gundersen Health System (La Crosse, Wisc.). In addition to his duties as CMO, Dr. Thompson is also a member of Gundersen Health System's board of directors. He has been a clinician at the system since 1993.

Douglass A. Towriss, MD. CMO and Director of Schneck Medical Center (Seymore, Ind.). Dr. Towriss, a critical care specialist, joined Schneck in 2002. In addition to his duties as CMO, he continues to perform clinical duties as a hospitalist.

Victor Trianfo, DO. CMO of Memorial Hospital of Union County (Marysville, Ohio). Dr. Trianfo has been at Memorial Hospital since 1999. Before his appointment as CMO in 2013, he served in many other leadership capacities, including assistant director of emergency medicine, vice president of medical staff and physician quality liaison.

Jonathon D. Truwit, MD, MBA. CMO of Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee ). Dr. Truwit was appointed Froedtert's CMO in December 2013. He comes to the position from the Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Health System, where he served as CMO and senior associate dean for clinical affairs.

Bruce Vanderhoff, MD, MBA. CMO of OhioHealth (Columbus). Before being named CMO of OhioHealth in 2008, Dr. Vanderhoff was vice president of medical education, quality and patient safety at OhioHealth's Columbus-based Grant Medical Center. 

Gary Wainer, DO. Executive Director and CMO of Chicago Health System. Dr. Wainer has been CMO of CHS since 2007. He also serves as vice president of clinical integration and CMO for Vanguard Health-Chicago.

Brent E. Wallace, MD. CMO of Intermountain Healthcare (Salt Lake City). Dr. Wallace oversees physician relations and medical affairs and coordinates hospital-based clinical programs at Intermountain Healthcare. He has practiced family medicine for 26 years in Roy, Utah.

Stephen L. Wallenhaupt, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Novant Health (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Before coming to Novant Health in 2006, Dr. Wallenhaupt served as executive vice president for medical affairs at Presbyterian Healthcare in Charlotte, N.C., beginning in 2001. Dr. Wallenhaupt is a board-certified cardiologist.

Stephen Weber, MD. Vice President for Clinical Effectiveness and CMO of University of Chicago Medical Center. Dr. Weber was appointed CMO of University of Chicago Medical Center in 2011. Before then, he served as University of Chicago Medical Center's director of infection control and clinical quality.

Mark Williams, MD. CMO of North Mississippi Health Services (Tupelo). Dr. Williams has been at NMHS since 2009. Before then, he was Birmingham, Ala.-based St. Vincent Health System's senior vice president and CMO.

Penny Ann Wheeler, MD. President and Chief Clinical Officer of Allina Health (Minneapolis). Dr. Wheeler, a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, has served as Allina Health's CCO since 2006. Previously, she served on the Allina Health Board of Directors as leader of its quality committee.

Suzanne R. White, MD, MBA. Executive Vice President and CMO of Detroit Medical Center. Dr. White has been at DMC for 22 years, serving extensively in emergency medicine at the hospital. She was appointed to her current position in 2010.

David Wood Jr., MD. CMO of Beaumont Health System (Royal Oak, Mich.). Dr. Wood was appointed CMO in 2013, following the resignation of Ananias C. Diokno, MD, who had been Beaumont's CMO since 2006. Dr. Wood is also president of Beaumont Physician Partners, the administrative organization for Beaumont physicians.

Robert Wyllie, MD. Chief Medical Operations Officer of Cleveland Clinic. Before being appointed CMOO, Dr. Wyllie was chief of the Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital and chairman of its Pediatric Institute. He was appointed CMOO of the system in 2011.
