Wisconsin man used stolen identity to rack up $20K in medical bills, police say

A Wisconsin man was charged this week with two felony counts of identity theft after allegedly stealing another man's identity to rack up $20,000 in medical bills, according to the Leader-Telegram

Charles Martin, of Milwaukee, allegedly used another man's identity to get care at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls, Oak Leaf Clinic and Medical X-Ray Consultants.

Mr. Martin, using the other man's identity, received care and a $11,244 bill from Sacred Heart, a $7,515 bill from St. Joseph's, a $931 bill from Oak Leaf Clinic and $1,287 from Medical X-Ray, according to the newspaper.

An Eau Claire police detective spoke to the man whose identity was allegedly stolen, and he said he has never received medical treatment or visited Wisconsin.

If convicted of both charges, Mr. Martin could be sentenced up to six years in prison. Mr. Martin's court appearance is scheduled for May 4.
