Representative Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) said in a statement that the department gave the House Veterans Affairs Committee the documents on a CD just after 5 p.m. on Sept. 28 after the committee missed the Sept. 27 deadline.

The VA department conducted an internal investigation into the construction of the Aurora VA hospital. The ongoing project is projected to cost nearly $1.7 billion ─ roughly $1 billion over initial budget estimates. The department denied previous requests by Rep. Coffman and other members of the VA committee to hand over documents from the internal investigation.

Lawmakers formally requested the U.S. Attorney General investigate the issue earlier this week.
