An OIG review found UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh incorrectly billed Medicare and received $26,547 in overpayments.
The hospital incorrectly billed patients’ second admission as a separate inpatient stay rather than a continuous stay based on their first admission. This occurred seven times due to inadequate training on same-day readmissions, according to the OIG report.
The hospital concurred with the OIG’s findings. It has repaid the improper claims and developed a plan to strengthen its training and monitor claims.
