UPMC physician faces charges for allegedly providing $18k worth of 'off the books' treatment

A Pittsburgh-based UPMC-affiliated physician is facing theft-related charges for allegedly providing $18,640 of "off the books" medical treatment to at least one patient, according to The Times.

A police report found Edwin Cheek, MD, an OB-GYN specialist at UPMC Women's Health Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Beaver Falls, Pa., conducted $18,640 of undisclosed medical procedures and "unlawfully" withheld the money from the practice, according to The Times.

UPMC reportedly initiated an internal investigation into Dr. Cheek, 69, in October 2017 after officials suspected he was working "off the books" for personal gain.

The police report stated UPMC human resources investigators discovered Dr. Cheek's and an unidentified patient's vehicles parked outside the practice on a Saturday when the office was reportedly closed for business. During the undisclosed appointment, Dr. Cheek allegedly provided "Patient A" with a skin treatment, Botox, laser hair removal and skin care products, and allegedly charged the individual $3,650 for the visit and procedures.

Police said Dr. Cheek conducted at least 10 additional "off the books" treatments with Patient A, amounting to approximately $15,000, the report states.
