University of Connecticut Researcher Allegedly Falsified Data on Red Wine Chemical

Dipak Das, Phd — a University of Connecticut researcher who reported positive effects of the chemical resveratrol, which is found in red wine — allegedly falsified some of his data, according to a New York Times report.

Dr. Das’ alleged fabricated data was found in 26 articles published in 11 journals As a result, the University of Connecticut is returning two new grants totaling $890,000 that Dr. Das had received back to the federal government.

The investigation began in Jan. 2009 following an anonymous allegation of “research irregularities” in Dr. Das’ laboratory, according to the report. A review board found his published articles contained 145 instances of fabrication and falsification of data, many of which involved manipulation of the research record called a western blot.

The charge against him is unlikely to affect resveratrol research because his work was not central to the field, according to the report.
