The criminal trial of John R. McLean, MD, — a cardiologist accused of placing heart stents into hundreds of patients who didn’t need them — began yesterday in Baltimore’s U.S. District Court, according to a Baltimore Sun report.
Dr. McLean used to practice at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. He was indicted last August on one count of healthcare fraud and six counts of making false statements to insurers and patients from 2003-2007. Investigators claim he performed more than 200 unnecessary stent procedures. He surrendered his medical license in 2007.
The criminal trial is expected to take a month.
