An OPO is a CMS-designated organization responsible for procuring, preserving and transporting organs to transplant centers in certain geographic areas. Hospitals that participate in Medicare and Medicaid have to work with the OPO designated for their area for transplant programs. However, hospitals can request a waiver to work with a different OPO.
Tri-Lakes Medical Center is currently required to work with Mid-South Transplant Foundation in Memphis, Tenn. The hospital requested a waiver to work with Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency in Flowood, Miss.
The reason for the waiver request was not disclosed.
