A Tennessee physician was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to his role in a $41 million Medicare fraud scheme.

Four things to know:

1. John Manning, MD, 64, of Ashland City, pleaded guilty in August 2023 to conspiring to commit healthcare fraud, according to an April 14 Justice Department news release.

2. Dr. Manning admitted that he worked for multiple telemedicine companies and signed orders or prescriptions for durable medical equipment, topical creams and cancer genetic tests based on brief conversations with a patient, or no conversation at all. He signed those orders in exchange for kickbacks and bribes.

3. From June 2016 through April 2019, Dr. Manning signed orders and prescriptions that caused more than $41 million in false claims to Medicare, of which Medicare paid more than $19 million.  Dr. Manning received more than $812,000 in kickbacks and bribes in connection with those orders.

4. In addition to prison, Dr. Manning was ordered to pay a criminal forfeiture money judgment totaling $812,303.41.
